But seriously — how do you handle this without losing the call? I’ve got a couple lines I use but I want to hear what works for you guys. Specifically the ones that actually keep the customer instead of just running them off.

Charge the same as everyone else. He is going to pay it somewhere. If he is your friend, he will want you to be bale to make a living.
